The University of Wisconsin-Madison Department of Dermatology offers an innovative curriculaum in core areas of dermatology along with subspecialty electives. The courses are challenging and rewarding and take place in a variety of clinical settings including University, Veterans Administration and community hospitals, and multiple outpatient clinics. The Department has a diverse faculty offering a variety of clinical, research and educational opportunities. General dermatology clinics plus specialty clinics in CTCL, Melanoma, Contact Dermatitis, Mohs Surgery, Lasers, Transplant-Dermatology complement the research areas of six NIH funded faculty. The department offers two distinct residency training programs. The three year program in General Dermatology begins at the PGY-2 level. This residency provides trainees with a broad educational experience in clinical, surgical, dermatopathology and research areas. Successful graduates of this program are strongly encouraged to take advantage of the optional PGY-5 year, the Year of Professional Enhancement. The combined Medicine-Dermatology program is one of only four in the country. This five-year program begins at the PGY-1 level with 80% of the year spent in Medicine and 20% in Dermatology. In the PGY-2 year, 80% is dedicated to Dermatology and 20% to Medicine. In years three to five the residents split their time equally between Medicine and Dermatology.
