A strong research effort is a major focus of the Department of Dermatology at the University of Wisconsin . We conduct state-of-the-art skin disease research to advance scientific knowledge and thus provide better care to patients.

Our work encompasses basic, clinical and translational research in epithelial cell cancers and other dermatologic diseases. Our aim is to advance the knowledge base by better understanding of cellular and molecular pathways involved in epithelial cancers and other skin diseases. These advances will lead to better management of diseases. To meet our goals, and to obtain a better understanding of disease, we apply the most modern scientific tools to skin-related research questions.

The pre- and post- doctoral trainees in the research laboratories learn a wide variety of molecular biology, cell biology and animal experimentation techniques, which are then applied to the study of skin disorders. Our research is supported by grants from the Dermatology Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Department of Defense and several other non-profit organizations and companies. Our investigators also pursue basic and translational research related to cancers of the prostate, breast and pancreas. The research areas currently being pursued are:

Targets and Agents for Cancer Chemoprevention and Treatment

Molecular Mechanisms of Cancer Development

Molecular Diagnosis of Skin Diseases
